Wednesday was hot & breezy. Thursday will be less breezy, but a bit hotter!
High pressure continues to gain steam... sending our temperatures up. Expect the heat to peak Thursday, with highs in the Valley between 101 & 103 degrees... hot! Friday may be a bit cooler, but not much. High pressure begins to weaken in earnest Saturday, which will allow our temperatures to begin to cool. The winds will diminish Thursday... but should pick up again Sunday. Models are now indicating what could be a windy day on tap. This is a new solution by the models, so we'll see what future runs suggest... but it's certainly something we'll keep an eye on. If models keep suggesting it, then Sunday could be pretty windy.
High pressure will collapse next week, allowing weak storms from the north Pacific to move in. Partly cloudy skies and much cooler weather again headed our way... along with mountain showers.
So hot the hot weather continues... but not for much longer!

Temperatures warmed up Tuesday, but it was still a little below average, temperature-wise. However, it's going to get hot real soon!
High pressure is strenthening... which is why we warmed up Tuesday. Look for high pressure to return our temperatures to near normal by Wednesday, and above normal on Thursday! Also, a breezy north wind will develop Wednesday. 25 to 30 mph gusts can be expected in the Valley, which will lower our humidity dramatically, and increase the fire danger... be careful.
The north winds turn light by Thursday, but Valley temperatures continue to warm to triple digits. A very slight delta breeze will begin Friday, which will start the cooldown... By Labor Day, we'll be looking at temperatues near 90 in the Valley, and even cooler weather beyond that!
So it's going to get hot... but it won't last too long.

This past weekend was very much like October, weather-wise. Look for the heat of Summer to return real quick.
Our unusually strong cool front is moving east, and high pressure will build back in starting Tuesday. That will help our temperatures return to Summer levels this week... and turn hot by the end of the week! Look for triple digits in the Valley by Thursday. We'll also develop a pressure gradient from the Pacific Northwest to the North State, which will aid a north wind to blow... about 5 to 15 mph. Couple that drying wind with the warming temperatures, and fire danger will be rising later this week.
It does look like high pressure will break down before Labor Day, so Monday should see near normal temperatures. But the heat of Summer will return!

Friday was another wonderful day... but even cooler weather is coming Saturday, with plenty of clouds!
High pressure continued to weaken, the delta breeze strenthened, and our temperatures continued to cool. A powerful (for August) cool front will continue the cooldown Saturday. This front has plenty of cool air, and plenty of moisture. Look for the clouds to stream in late Friday night, turning Saturday mostly cloudy. There should be showers in the mountains, and even a few sprinkles in the Valley! Temperatures will drop to the 70's in the Valley, and 60's in the mountains. Impressive!
The clouds move out Sunday, but it stays fairly cool for the last weekend of August. We'll see high pressure return next week, so September will start on a fairly typical note... but the last weekend of August will seem like mid-October!

Ahhh... now that's more like it. Thursday turned out much cooler, and expect another big drop in temperatures by Saturday!
High temperatures dropped close to 15 degrees on Thursday, due to high pressure weakening, moving south, and a healthy delta breeze kicking up. Another big drop in temperatures is headed our way Saturday, due to an unusually strong August cool front headed our way!
A weak surface ridge of high pressure will build into the Pacific Northwest Friday, kicking up a bit of a north breeze early. It should also prevent us from cooling too much Friday... maybe just a couple of degrees.
The Fall-like cool front sweeps through the North State Saturday. Temperatures should drop close to another 15 degrees, along with mostly cloudy skies for everyone... and showers in the mountains! This front is cool enough, there could be a dusting of snow on Mt. Shasta and Lassen Peak early Sunday morning.
A taste of October in August!

Wednesday... hottest day of the summer! But the cooldown begins now.
Record highs for just about everyone in the North State Wednesday. Some notables:
Red Bluff, Orland & Corning... 111 (no records for Corning, but that's hot!), Redding & Chico... 110, Sacramento & Willows...108, Oroville, & Marysville... 107, Paradise...105, Burney & Quincy...100.
Massive high pressure over us caused the heat. It will begin to weaken and slide east Thursday, helping our temperatures cool close to 10 degrees. A cool front approaches the North State Thursday. Ahead of it, gusty southwest winds will develop in the Sierra & Cascades, which will generate Red Flag conditions (high fire danger) in combination with the low humidity. No thunderstorms.
The front sweeps through Friday, and our temperatures continue to cool. By Saturday, we're in the low 80's in the Valley, with 60's & 70's in the mountains. Scattered showers & thunderstorms in the mountains Saturday, too.
So Wednesday was HOT! But MUCH cooler weather is coming... soon!

Record breaking heat in the North State Tuesday... and we've got more coming Wednesday!
Tuesday turned into the hottest day of the year for most of the North State, and we broke record highs, too. Redding, Red Bluff, Oroville, Mt. Shasta, Hayfork, and Burney all broke record highs Tuesday, as a very large ridge of high pressure dominated our weather. Not much change in this ridge Wednesday, so not much change in the heat. An interesting side note is that Monday's north wind dried us out dramatically. Dry air heats up quickly in the daytime, but also cools down quick at night, so you can get amazing swings in temperatures between the morning low and the afternoon high. Check these swings out:
Alturas...low 37, high 95... 58 degree spread!
Burney...low 40, high 98... 58 degree spread!
Quincy...low 41, high 98... 57 degree spread!
Chico... low 58, high 106... 48 degree spread!
This massive ridge of high pressure breaks down after Wednesday. Replacing it will be an incoming cool front, which will knock our highs down to around 80 in the Valley by this weekend! It also looks capable of delivering partly to mostly cloudy skies to everyone, and even a few mountain showers.
So, if it's too hot for you... wait until the weekend!

It was a hot start to the week... but much cooler weather is headed our way!
After a nice weekend with highs in the 80's in the Valley, we warmed up to near 100 Monday. Quick turnaround! A breezy north wind (10 to 25 mph) kept fire danger high. The good news is that the north wind will diminish as high pressure is on the move... but the bad news is that it's going to get hotter Tuesday... look for highs in the Valley from 103 to 107. The ridge will be moving into the Intermountain West, which favors gusty winds Monday night and Tuesday morning in the Sierra & Cascade ridgetops.
Wednesday looks just as hot. High pressure finally weakens by Thursday, and we begin the cooldown. A cool front in the north Pacific will take advantage of high pressure weakening, and move into the North State this weekend, much like we had last weekend! This front looks much stronger, however. That means more cooling, with highs dipping into the 80's Saturday in the Valley, and 70's on Sunday! For August... amazing!
The front is packing some moisture, too. Look for partly cloudy skies Saturday, and mostly cloudy skies Sunday... even mountain showers Sunday!
So just as quickly as it warmed up Monday, an even bigger cooldown is coming. We'll drop close to 40 degrees between Wednesday and Sunday... wow!

Big changes are coming... first a lot cooler, then much hotter!
A powerful (for August) cool front will arrive this weekend. It should bring a few high clouds, and maybe even a slight chance of a shower in the Siskiyous near the Oregon border. Temperatures should drop close to 10 degrees Saturday, meaning Valley highs only in the 80's. Winds will pick up as the front passes. A breezy south wind will gust to 20 mph in the Valley, making for a pleasant afternoon... but those winds will gust over 30 mph in the Sierra & Cascades. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity has prompted Red Flag Warnings (high fire danger) to be issued for the eastern Sierra & Cascades for Saturday. However, no lightning is expected.
Winds should subside Sunday, but the mild weather will continue. But it won't last long.
High pressure returns quickly, and in combination with a breezy north wind (gusts to 20 mph), temperatures will heat up quickly. Upper 80's on Sunday, but upper 90' by Monday, and triple digits Tuesday & Wednesday. The duo of high temperatures and a light north wind may yield Red Flag conditions in the Valley early next week. We'll see.
Until then... enjoy the nice weekend!

Temperatures warmed up Thursday, returning us to near normal highs for August. We'll experience a taste of Fall this weekend as temperatures drop dramatically... then return right back to August temperatures by Monday!
A powerful (for August) cool front currently in the north Pacific is headed for the North State. Only a little cooler Friday, as we await the front's arrival. It moves in on Saturday, dropping Valley highs into the 80's, along with a breezy south wind. That wind could get gusty in the mountains, which would yield higher fire danger. Sunday looks very mild for August, too... but it won't last.
High pressure returns quickly to the North State, putting our highs near 100 most of next week. A light north breeze, coupled with the hot temperatures, will increase the fire danger in the Valley.
So, first comes the Fall preview this weekend, then it's back to August reality next week. A bit of everything in the next 7 days!

Wednesday was wonderful, with below normal highs. Even more cooling will be headed our way this weekend!
A dry but potent weather disturbance moving through the North State the past few days has kept our temperatures nice. It should be gone by tomorrow, and high pressure should return... look for temperatures to rebound to near average highs.
But a strong (for August) cool front will move on in this weekend, and drop our temperatures into the 80's in the Valley... just like late September! We could see some 30's in the mountains for overnight lows, too.
It won't last... high pressure returns quickly. Couple that with a breezy north wind Monday, and highs will return to August normals (and then some)... flirting with triple digits by Tuesday. With the light north wind, low humidity, and hot temperatures... fire danger will be high early next week.
But this weekend... Marvelous!

Tuesday was a nice day in the Valley, as temperatures cooled down and southerly breezes picked up. Look for the nice weather to continue through the weekend!
A fairly dry but potent weather disturbance arrived in northern California Tuesday, cooling us down and increasing the winds. Those winds were refreshing in the Valley, but in the mountains they increased the fire danger... Red Flag Warnings went up for the gusty winds and low humidity. There were also a few thunderstorms in western Siskiyou county... but not many. The winds diminish overnight, and Wednesday with even cooler temperatures (thanks to that potent weather disturbance!) and lighter winds, looks wonderful.
High pressure will try to return Thursday, so our temperatures warm a little. But an even stronger disturbance will arrive by the weekend, cooling us down again! Expect 80's in the Valley by Sunday.
Long range models are hinting at our first north wind event of the season for Monday... which means hot weather and low humidity in the Valley (and high fire danger). It doesn't look too bad... wind gusts to only 20 mph. We'll continue to monitor it.

It was a toasty start to the workweek... but cooler weather is on the way!
Hot temperatures in parts of the North State Monday, with Redding reaching 104, Weaverville/Hayfork 101, Red Bluff 100, & Quincy 98. It was cooler in the Valley south of Tehama county, thanks to a healthy delta breeze. That breeze will strenghthen a tad Tuesday... couple that with high pressure beginning to weaken and slide south, and all signs are pointing to cooler weather this week. A dry disturbance from the Pacific will move high pressure aside, and initiate the cooling.
Another disturbance arrives just in time for the weekend, and gives us a very nice weekend! Look for slightly below temperatures.
Overall, a nice week ahead!

Friday the 13th wasn't that unlucky for us, weather-wise, as we saw pretty nice weather across the North State. Warmer weather is on tap by next week.
High pressure is slowly returning to the North State, warming our temperatures up. However... a weak disturbance from the Pacific will move through this weekend, keeping high pressure from really getting a strong foothold on us, meaning we'll continue to see near normal temperatures through the weekend! This disturbance has very little moisture with it, so I'm not expecting mountain thunderstorm formation, either. Overall, it looks like a nice weekend!
Next week starts out warmer, as high pressure finally establishes itself. But yet another dry disturbance from the Pacific arrives by mid-week, and prevents high pressure from sending high temperatures through the roof!
Still a few meteors from the Perseid Meteor Shower are possible Friday and Saturday nights, but the best of the show was Thursday night.

Wow! What a cool day Wednesday was, with highs around 10 degrees below normal. However, it can't last (this is August, after all). The warmup begins Thursday.
A potent August cool front (how often do you hear that? Not often!) swept through the North State Tuesday, and the cool air kept flowing in Wednesday. That front also enhanced the delta breeze... a double whammy of cooling! High pressure will begin to build back by Thursday, and that will mean warmer temperatures are headed our way. That ridge will also diminish the delta breeze to a trickle by the weekend, meaning near average temperatures are on tap by Friday, then above average by the weekend: triple digits in the Valley by Sunday. Long range models are now suggesting for the 2nd day in a row that this ridge has potential to be the strongest of the summer. That's going to put our temperatures in the 103-106 range for Chico, and 110-114 range for Redding by Monday. Uh-oh.
Now, for some better news:
It's that time of year again: time for the Perseid meteor shower! The strong delta breeze we've enjoyed recently has cleaned our air quality up nicely, meaning more meteors to see for Valley residents. Look for about 30 per hour Wednesday night. The peak will be Thursday night; in a dark, mountain location, expect around 60 to 80 meteors per hour... somewhat less for Valley residents. Shortly after sunset, you'll also be able to see Venus, Saturn, Mars, and the crescent moon in very close proximity in the western sky; the meteors will begin in the east. The meteor viewing gets better after midnight, as the point of origin (the constellation Perseus, hence the name: Perseids) for the meteors rises higher in the sky. Always a fun summer event!
