Sunday was truly super, with lots of sunshine. Monday saw the clouds return, along with a few showers.
Those showers will last through Tuesday, but never amount to much. A couple of weak disturbances will bring the wet weather, but are 'coast huggers'... that is, they'll move south along the coastline, and never punch inland. So the Coast Range, the coastline itself, will get OK rain totals... but away from the coast, not too much. Just... a few showers. Snow levels are around 3500'.
Wednesday looks wonderful. Sunshine and near 60! But it won't last... another weak storm arrives Thursday, and should deliver just a few showers. Friday's storm will be much stronger.
Friday's storm doesn't look too windy, but it looks fairly wet. Right now, models are indicating 1/2" to 1" of rain, with snow levels around 3500' to 4000'. Showers again Saturday.
Sunday looks great! Sun and 60's.

A line of thunderstorms has developed ahead of our incoming storm Friday evening. This line is a little east of Gridley, and stretches northward to near Oroville and Paradise. Another complex is developing in eastern Tehama county near Vina. These storms are moving northward, and redeveloping in the places they've moved out of... a 'training' effect. The main threat will be heavy rain and pea-sized hail, along with dangerous lightning. This activity should diminish once the rain from the main storm arrives, which should be near Midnight.

Another storm is headed our way Friday night, and should last into Saturday. Then we'll get a nice day for Sunday!
Friday night's/Saturday's storm isn't as big as Thursday night's storm was. But it still should be able to deliver close to 1/2" of rain for the Valley. Snow levels will be around 3500' in the Siskiyous and Cascades, while about 4000' in the Sierra. Saturday afternoon a bit of instability will move in, meaning there's a slight chance of a Valley thunderstorm. Not too much of a pressure gradient, so expect winds to stay under 30 mph.
That storm should clear out by Sunday, leaving us with partly cloudy skies. The clouds return Monday, and we'll have another shot of showers move in Monday night, but that storm looks pretty weak. Fairly light rainfall amounts... maybe 1/4" for the Valley.
After that, our next storms would be Thursday and Friday... again, not too big.

A strong storm will move through the North State Thursday night, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain... and another storm is headed our direction!
Thursday nights' storm looks powerful. It's tapping into decent subtropical moisture, and has good dynamics (energy to squeeze the water from the storm), so we're looking at close to an inch of rain in the Valley overnight. Low pressure approaching the Oregon coastline is moderately deep, so expect winds to gust to near 35 mph in the Valley... with higher gusts over the mountain ridgetops. Snow levels in the Trinity Alps, Siskiyous and Cascades will drop to near 3000', while staying a bit higher in the Sierra... around 3500'. The main band of moisture from this storm should be south of the North State by Friday, so we'll see only a few lingering showers over our area, and winds should be much quieter as well as low pressure moves into Canada.
Storm #2 arrives Friday night, and will last into Saturday. It doesn't look as wet... but should still give us a good soak. Not much low pressure with this storm, so not much wind on tap. Little change in snow levels.
The sun will come out... Sunday! Both Sunday and Monday look nice. A weak disturbance will drop southward from the Pacific Northwest Tuesday, and give us a few showers Tuesday evening. The rest of the week looks quiet.

Wednesday was a pretty nice day... but a couple of pretty big storms are headed our way.
Showers from storm #1 will arrive Thursday afternoon. This storm has a decent tap into subtropical moisture, so it's got plenty of rain. The heart of the storm arrives Thursday night, with moderate to heavy rain overnight. As low pressure approaches the coast, the southerly wind will pick up, gusting to 35 mph. The rain and wind will diminish quickly Friday... but Friday night will see the arrival of storm #2! Not quite as wet and definitely less windy, it will still keep the rain going through Saturday. For the Thursday night through Saturday period, I'm expecting 1" to 3" of rain in the Valley. Snow levels will be around 3500' in the Siskiyous, Cascades, and Trinity Alps... closer to 4000' in the Sierra. Expect 1' to 3' of snow in the higher elevations (above 5000')!
By Sunday, we're looking at a bit of sunshine, which will continue through much of next week.
But the next few days are looking very wet!

We'll see showers Tuesday night, but this isn't a big storm. The storm arriving Thursday night, lasting through Saturday... that's a big storm.
Tuesday night's storm will last through Wednesday morning, but I'm expecting pretty light rain amounts. Snow levels will be around 3500' in the Siskiyous, Trinity Alps and Cascades... about 4000' in the Sierra. Not much wind... we'll dry up Wednesday afternoon.
The first of the stronger storms arrive Thursday afternoon. A secondary wave arrives Friday, keeping the rain going. Snow levels shouldn't change much from Tuesday night... this is a mild storm. As low pressure approaches the coast, expect winds to gust to near 30 mph. Breezy, but not nearly as bad as the earlier storms. Friday looks like the heaviest rain, with still pretty good rain on Saturday. In the Valley, we're looking at about 1" to 3" of rain between Thursday night and Saturday.
We'll dry it up just in time for Super Bowl Sunday, with partly cloudy skies through early next week.

We started the week with showers on Monday. Expect more!
Monday's showers should be gone by Tuesday morning. Another weak storm arrives late Tuesday afternoon, and should make Tuesday night wet again. Snow level will be around 3500' in the Siskiyous and Cascades, and around 4000' in the Sierra. Rain and snow amounts should be similar to Monday's storm.
This rain should dry up by Wednesday morning. We'll get a break in the rain Wednesday afternoon and most of Thursday... then a bigger storm targets us for Thursday night through Saturday.
The end of the week storm looks pretty good. Not very windy, but decent rain between Thursday night through Saturday... probably over 1" in the Valley. Snow levels looks similar to Tuesday nights storm.
By Sunday, we should dry up. Looking partly cloudy after that.

Friday night saw scattered light showers move through with a little rain... but not much.
Friday night/Saturday morning's storm just isn't that impressive. Expect scattered showers as it falls apart moving inland. Not much wind as low pressure isn't deep at all. Should be drying up Saturday afternoon.
Sunday looks nice, with partly cloudy skies. A new storm arrives Monday, with a little more punch, but still just showers. Most of next week looks cloudy; another chance of showers Wednesday.
Long range models are suggesting something more substantial next weekend. Friday through Monday... pretty good rain. It's a ways out, but they're agreeing on it, so it's got some legs.
Enjoy the sun Sunday!

Thursday afternoon the clouds starting thickening up ahead of our Friday storm. Looks like our next chance of sun will be Sunday.
The Friday/Saturday storm doesn't look that impressive, but it will bring some rain. Showers should materialize Friday afternoon, turning to a light rain Friday night. Showers will continue Saturday morning, mostly drying up Saturday afternoon. Snow levels look relatively high... starting around 4500', but dropping to near 3500' Friday night. The low driving this storm isn't deep at all, so light winds are expected.
Sunday looks like a good day, with partly cloudy skies. Our next storm arrives Monday, but it also looks weak... just showers. Another storm moves in Tuesday night, and looks a little stronger, but the winds remain fairly light.
Our long range models are now latching on to a storm next Thursday, which has some wind potential... but that's a long ways out. We'll see what the models think about it tomorrow. They continue to suggest that next weekend looks wet.

Wednesday turned into a wonderful day... sunshine and sixties. Thursday will be close to as nice.
Weak high pressure brought mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures to the North State Wednesday. An approaching storm will bring increasing high clouds Thursday, but temperatures should still be near 60 in the Valley. We shouldn't see much (if any) fog in the Valley, because of a light north wind.
Clouds roll in Friday, and by the afternoon, a few showers do as well. Those will continue into Saturday morning, but I'm not expecting much... probably less than .10". We'll clear things up nicely for next Sunday.
The clouds return again next week, although it looks like the rain will hold off until next Wednesday. Long range models are suggesting a pretty wet weekend the following weekend... that's a ways out. We'll see.

It's been a while, but finally some sun is headed our way!
Tuesday's storm stayed mostly south of us. Rain in central and southern California, but just mostly cloudy skies for the North State. Weak high pressure will build into the North State overnight, and fairly sunny skies will dominate Wednesday and Thursday! There will be occasional high clouds the next few days, but sun will be the dominant feature. A light north wind should keep the fog near Sacramento the next couple of mornings.
A weak storm moves in Friday. This storm will fall apart as it fights through high pressure to get to us, so we're expecting just a few showers. We'll get another break in the wet weather this weekend, with partly to mostly sunny skies headed our way again. Another weak storm arrives Monday, but it, too, looks unimpressive.
Enjoy the sun!

Monday was another wet day in the North State. But it looks like a break in the rain is headed our way.
Another healthy storm moved into the North State Monday, bringing yet more rain for the Valley, and mountain snow. This storm will linger into early Tuesday, but the rain should dry up in the Valley by the afternoon. The mountain snow will probably hang around into the afternoon, however. Snow levels are close to 2000' in the Siskiyous, Cascades, and Trinity Alps... closer to 3000' in the Sierra. This storm doesn't have much of a surface low to speak of, so winds are pretty quiet.
High pressure will build into the North State Wednesday. Couple that with a light north wind, and we should be looking at some sunshine! The ridge will force the jet stream northward for a few days, and the north wind should dry us out enough that fog won't be a major issue for us. Sacramento should see fog, be our will just be patchy.
Our next storm arrives Friday, but it looks weak... just strong enough to deliver a few showers. We'll dry out after that, just in time for the weekend... and it looks like a nice weekend!

There were a few scattered showers Friday... but not many. Expect a totally dry day Saturday before our next storm arrives Sunday.
Saturday will be our 'break' in-between storms. The clouds will hang around, but it should finally be dry. Our next storm arrives Sunday, and models are indicating more rain with it than the previously thought! It might drop 1/2" of rain in the Valley, with lighter amounts expected Monday. This is a warmer storm, so expect snow levels to rise to 3500' in the Sierra, and 3000' in the Siskiyous and Trinity Alps. It also does NOT look like a windy storm... wind gusts should stay under 25 mph.
By Tuesday, a longer break in the rain is in store. We'll be dry from Tuesday through Thursday, with some sun both Wednesday and Thursday. Another storm is due in Friday.
Our local lakes could still use LOTS more rain... as of Friday evening, Lake Oroville was only 48% of average for January 22nd, while Shasta Lake was 76%. So the recent rains have helped a lot... but more is needed to fill them after a few years of drought.

We'll never know for sure, because records aren't kept in the North State for this... but it sure seems likely. Once that low fills and moves on, a little sun is possible Saturday.
The barometer plunged to 28.93" in Chico and 28.94" in Redding... amazingly low! Sacramento keeps records. They dropped to 28.95", which tied their old record set in 1916. So while it will never be 'official'... it sure seems likely this is the lowest barometric pressure we've ever seen in the North State.
Pressure is low all over California, which is why it isn't that windy today. It isn't how low the pressure goes, it's how much of a difference in pressure there is between 2 areas that determines the wind speed. The low that is moving over the North State is bringing yet more Valley rain & mountain snow, which will turn to showers Friday... and dry up Friday night. Snow levels will drop to 2000' in Trinity County, the Siskiyous, and the Cascades... and 2500' in the Sierra. Magalia should finally see a bit of snow... maybe 1 inch. Still rain in Paradise.
Saturday will FINALLY see a break in the storms. Expect some sun!
By Sunday, the storms return. But these storms look tiny in comparison to our recent storms. Light rain will move back in to the North State Sunday, and last through Tuesday. These storms don't have much wind to offer, and expect snow levels to rise over 3000' by Monday. More sun is possible Wednesday.

Wow... what a Wednesday storm! As it moves on, winds will diminish greatly... even some sun by Saturday.
It was yet another wet and windy across the North State Wednesday, with south wind gusts to:
49 mph in Redding
52 mph in Red Bluff
53 mph in Willows
55 mph in Chico
58 mph in Oroville!
What caused the incredible winds was extremely deep low pressure. The barometer plunged to 29.09" in Chico, and 29.01" in Redding... the lowest readings I've seen in the North State. Trying to verify if those are records... the 28.88 recorded in Medford, OR was a record! So tremendous amounts of air rushed northward to fill in that low, causing the very strong winds. The low will lift northward overnight, causing the winds to diminish quickly. We saw another 1/2" to 1 1/2" of rain Wednesday, and LOTS of snow in the mountains! Chester recieved 1.5 feet, Mineral 2 feet, and Mt. Shasta City about 1 foot. With all of the snow, avalanches are possible in Siskiyou county above 5000' through Thursday. Be careful! Also, in the Valley, the Tehama bridge near Los Molinos on the Sacramento River will flood the county park for the next day or two. Minor flooding.
Thursday's storm will head into southern California. With low pressure south of us, expect our winds to shift to a northerly direction, pulling in some cooler air from the north, and snow levels will continue to drop. They'll get down below 2000' in Siskiyou & Trinity counties, and near 2500' in the Sierra. A rain/snow mix is possible in Magalia Thursday; light snow by Friday morning... but there won't be much moisture left, so expect only light accumulations. In the Valley, expect light rain showers through Friday morning, finally drying up by Friday afternoon. Partly sunny skies on tap for Saturday!
Our next storm will see the clouds return Sunday, and a few light showers are possible Sunday afternoon. The main storm arrives Monday and Tuesday, but looks MUCH weaker than this weeks storms. Not much wind, and only light rain expected.
